Happiness, it would seem, is not a means, but an end.
The route to travel toward this destination, however, isn't one of productivity or earnings, leisure or even notoriety. Rather, the way to be happy is to first be grateful.
According to David Steindl-Rast, "It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy."
So instead of asking yourself, "Am I happy?" instead ask yourself, "Am I grateful?"
