On tragedy

The absolute fastest way to build community is tragedy (although I don’t recommend it).

This is because sudden uncertainty activates the need within us to connect with others.

Connection is our superpower as humans. We dominate the food chain not because we are the fastest or biggest. We have no natural body armor and cannot blend into our surroundings.

We win by working together.

And the best way forward to something better is together.

Tragedy reminds us in an instant what matters most. May we not rely on such devastating and jolting reminders but rather do the daily work to show up, reach out, and pitch in.

Then, when tragedy strikes (which it inevitably will), the very thing we need is close at hand to get us through.
