You're well aware of the Golden Rule: "Treat others how you want to be treated." You may have even heard of the Platinum Rule: "Treat others how they want to be treated."
Leaders must put the platinum rule into practice. It is the highest notion of respect. A leader will not inspire respect unless he or she gives it to those in one's care.
The best way to do this is to ask your community, your followers, your supervisee, your students, or your group how they would like to be treated, led, and motivated. You don't merely bow to their wishes, but demonstrating this basic level of respect and understanding will earn you the respect you desire.
And this, of course, is how you would like to be treated. The Platinum Rule carries such power - treat others how they would like to be treated and you, in turn, will be treated as you wish, too.
