I talk and write a lot about the idea of ROC: Return on Community.
Leaders want to know: “If I spend time and money building community, or if I dedicate a person or team to this, when will it pay off?”
Fair question, but ultimately short-sighted.
When you focus on community, you’ll see better outcomes not merely because you can tell everyone you’re focusing on community. You’ll see better outcomes because you’re really focusing on your people. And your people now have a renewed sense of purpose, feel like they belong somewhere, and have somewhere to turn to when things get difficult.
Remember: the ultimate goal of deep community isn’t to help you get you what you want. It’s to help you become who you want to be.
And once you’re the kind of person you want to be, it’s much easier to get what you want.
