He has the highest single season batting average in the modern baseball era. He’s the only National League player to win the Triple Crown twice. And he never went to the movies until long after he retired.

In the 1920s, the picture show was all the rage, especially if you were one of the highest earners in Major League Baseball. It was a place to be seen and enjoy the spoils of your talents. But Rogers Hornsby didn’t attend a movie until 1952 for fear that taking in cinema would ruin his eyesight and make him less effective as a hitter.
