The city of Boston doesn’t pay for Christmas trees.

In 1917, a deadly explosion destroyed much of Halifax, Nova Scotia. First responders from the city of Boston were some of the first on the scene to help with relief efforts. As a way to say thank you, Nova Scotia sends Boston a Christmas tree each holiday season.

The personnel that boarded a train over 100 years ago to run toward the destruction weren’t concerned about a municipal balance sheet. They went to help because that’s who they were: helpers.

You’ll find that when you are generous, it will spread. Repayment may come years later and the dividends are immeasurable.

Your job isn’t to count if the generosity debt is paid (it always will be). Your job is to spend like there’s no tomorrow (there always will be).
