Brain Snacks 034: The secret of high performance
High performing teams didn’t achieve high performance because everyone on the team has always been perfect.
High performing teams became high performing because they made a lot of mistakes.
In fact, high performing leaders let team members make mistakes, even at their expense. There is no better way to learn than by doing something wrong, understanding the mistake, correcting it, and trying again.
(Low performing teams stop after the “doing something wrong” stage.)
When someone makes a mistake, the high performer’s skills aren’t lessened. In fact, their skills of leadership, teaching, coaching, and motivating have only just increased.
High performers become high performers when they doesn’t let their (or others’) mistakes end their performance.
High performers aren’t the most perfect; they’re just the most resilient.
