Will You Read a Book With Me?

A quick break from Brain Snacks to share something fun we can do together in August.

Nearly one-fourth of all Americans haven’t read a book in the past year, and daily time spend reading continues to decline.

Most days, I spend between 30-60 minutes reading. This is a new discipline I began during COVID and it’s allowed me several benefits:

  • So far this year I’ve read more books than I did in 2018 and 2019 combined

  • This has allowed for me to generate ideas that improve my company and my life

  • It’s widened my perspective on a variety of issues from personal development and racism to logistics and curveballs (like, literal curveballs)

  • It’s brought down stress levels and given me zen moments

For the last two months, our team at Batch has been reading a monthly book together and discussing it weekly. This process has helped willing team members generate ideas and action steps that benefit our company.

And next month, I’m inviting you to join in.

I’m announcing the Small Business Book Club, launching in August. Whether you own, lead, or help manage a small business (or any business of any size for that matter), I think spending the five Mondays in August with us discussing Upstream will have positive effects on your work and life.

Upstream, the new book by Dan Heath, explores ways that we as leaders can be more proactive in our approach to problem solving. If you’re constantly putting out fires in your business and would like ideas and proven ways to prevent them, this book can help.

Each Monday, we’ll discuss via Zoom what we’ve read and how we can apply it to our work and life. Best of all, each week we’ll be joined by someone who is an “upstream” thinker and has used similar principles in their work and life (also, as a commitment to diversity of thought and background, each week’s interviewee will be someone other than white or male since we’ll be seeing the world through that lens on account of the author’s background).

A complete discussion guide will also accompany us on our journey.

Would you like to join in and read along with us? If nothing else, you can make sure you’re not part of the 24% of folks who won’t have read a book this year.

Also, to sweeten the deal, use code AUGBOOKCLUB to get 15% club membership (which includes a copy of the book).

Happy reading.
